The Cup is a coffee house and eatery on University Avenue in Muncie, Indiana. We sit in The Village, the small stretch of storefronts where the city and the university run into each other.

Some mornings the room is full of students. Some mornings it's neighbors, people on their way to work, a table of friends who have been meeting here for years. We are a coffee house in Muncie first, and the door is open to whoever walks through it.

Being near Ball State University shapes the day here without defining it. Class schedules set the rhythm in the morning. By afternoon the room belongs to everyone.

Espresso pulled behind the counter. Chai, spiced and warm, poured into a mug worth holding onto. Smoothies when the afternoon calls for something cold.

On the food side: bagels, toasted and built to order, and paninis pressed hot. Breakfast runs until 3pm, which means the eggs are still going long after the morning rush has cleared out.

People fold The Cup into their week in small ways, and those small ways add up to something. A room you can eat, drink, study, meet, or relax in, for as long as the afternoon lets you.

Ball State is a few blocks away, and The Village has always been the seam between the university and the rest of the city. We're on that seam.

Students come in, and so do faculty and staff. So do people who have lived in Muncie a long time and have no reason to think about the academic calendar at all. Parents visiting campus. Alumni back in town, surprised by what's changed and what hasn't. Two people meeting for coffee because it's easier than meeting anywhere else.
